Review and Photos – Sam Lynch at the Vogue Theatre, Vancouver, Sep 24, 2024

Crafting poetry in the form of soft, indie-rock songs, Sam Lynch invites you to feel things deeply. Performing solo under a lone spotlight to the right of the stage, the singer-songwriter quickly took hold of the crowd’s attention and performed a moving set for the group who gathered early. Lynch is a notable highlight at any show she opens, and this set was no exception.

A solo show with two guitars to keep her company on stage, the award-winning Vancouver artist opened for fellow Canadian, Andy Shauf, at the Vogue Theatre on Tuesday night. After a few songs and little banter, Lynch got more chatty with the crowd as she talked about the release of her upcoming album, Outline, on November 15. She’s embracing the forward-motion that comes from releasing a record, the artist noted, and it was clear she felt good about the accomplishment. Her set consisted mostly of new songs from Outline, though she interspersed older releases like “Good Year” and “Off the Rails” from her debut EP, Little Disappearance, released in 2020.

Leading into the unreleased track “Dog Song”, Lynch shared her confusing experience dog-sitting for a friend in LA. There will always be things we don’t understand in life, she noted, including the aforementioned dog, but also ourselves, she concluded thoughtfully.

Before making way for the evening’s headliner, Andy Shauf, to take the stage, Lynch asked the crowd if they had any questions for Andy. She shared her own, “what’s the best meal you’ve had on tour?” – but don’t steal it, she warned the happily-primed audience. Whether fans came early for a comfortable seat or a front-row spot on the floor for Lynch’s set, it was a treat to see this local gem perform.

Lynch’s second to last song of the evening was her latest single, “All The Life”. “What are you gonna do with all the life you have?”, she sings. Enjoying a relaxed evening listening to her beautiful songs with a hometown crowd seems like a very good start.
